Screen and webcam

Record your screen and your face at the same time.

A face in the corner turns a walkthrough into someone showing you around. Shotnix records your camera alongside the screen as its own track, so the webcam overlay isn't burned into the recording. After you stop, you choose its shape, blur or remove what's behind you, move it anywhere, and switch to full camera when you're talking straight to the viewer.

How screen recording with a webcam works

Turn on the camera in the recording bar before you start. A round live preview floats on screen so you can frame yourself, and it never appears in the screen capture. Record an area, a window, or a whole display as usual, with your microphone and your Mac's sound if you want them.

The camera is saved as its own track, not stamped into the screen image. That is why everything below can change after you record.

A webcam overlay you can restyle later

  • Four shapes: Circle, Rounded, Wide, and Cutout, which shows just you over the screen with no frame.
  • Resize it, mirror it, or hide it.
  • Put it in any of eight spots. Pick one in the Camera tab, or drag the bubble on the preview and it snaps into place.
  • Let it shrink out of the way during zooms, so it doesn't cover what you're zooming in on.

Blur or remove what's behind you

Set Behind you to Original, Blur, or Remove. Blur softens a messy room. Remove replaces it with your video's own background, the wallpaper, gradient, or color you picked in the Style tab, worked out on your Mac frame by frame. Even light and a clear contrast between you and the wall give the cleanest edge.

Full camera, side by side, or hidden

Camera layouts sit on their own lane on the timeline. Add one at the playhead: Full camera fills the frame for talking points, Side by side puts the screen and camera next to each other, and Camera hidden shows only the screen. Each layout eases in and out, so the switch looks deliberate rather than jumpy.

One click adds a full-camera intro and outro: you say hello, the screen takes over, and you come back to sign off.

Your camera in vertical video

Switch to 9:16, 4:5, or 1:1 and the screen pans to follow your cursor while the camera, captions, and keycaps stay put. A vertical video still has you in the corner, right where you placed yourself.

The built-in way, and its catch

With only Apple's apps, you can open QuickTime Player, choose File → New Movie Recording, turn on View → Float on Top, and then record the screen with ⌘⇧5. It works, but the camera window becomes part of the screen image: one shape, fixed in place, and impossible to move, resize, or hide afterwards.

Good to know

  • Turn the camera on before you record. It can't be added to a recording afterwards.
  • While recording, the preview is always a round bubble. Shape, background, and layouts are chosen in the editor.
  • Camera styling works on Shotnix recordings made with the camera on. A video from another app has no separate camera track.
  • Shotnix records to a file. There is no live streaming.
  • Requires an Apple silicon Mac (M1 or later) with macOS 13 or newer.

Questions

How do I record my screen and webcam at the same time on Mac?

In Shotnix, turn on the camera in the recording bar, then record as usual. The camera is saved as its own track, so you can restyle and move it afterwards. With built-in tools, you can float a QuickTime camera window on top and record the screen with ⌘⇧5, but the camera is then fixed into the recording.

Does the camera preview show up in the screen recording?

No. The floating preview is only there to help you frame yourself. The camera goes into its own track and appears in the video wherever you put it in the editor.

Can I blur or remove my background without a green screen?

Yes. In the Camera tab, set Behind you to Blur or Remove. Remove puts your video's own background behind you, and Cutout shows just you over the screen. Both are processed on your Mac.

Can I move or resize my webcam after recording?

Yes. Drag the bubble on the preview to any of eight spots, change its size and shape, mirror it, or hide it. You can also switch between full camera, side by side, and hidden anywhere on the timeline.

Can I start with my face full screen and then switch to the screen?

Yes. One click adds a full-camera intro and outro, and you can add Full camera anywhere else for talking points. Each layout eases in and out.

Does it work for vertical videos?

Yes. Switch to 9:16, 4:5, or 1:1 and the screen pans to follow your cursor while your camera, captions, and keycaps stay put.
